Project.

This project is a collaborative, creative, and participative public engagement with research study undertaken by Edinburgh Napier University and the Museum of Walking. We are seeking residents of Edinburgh’s communities to contribute to a sonic walking map of the history and future of Edinburgh’s festivals.

Edinburgh is the world’s leading festival city with a history of more than 70 years, the city’s annual festivals attract 4.5 million visitors from around the world and generate £313 million for Scotland’s economy. This project aims to uncover stories of Edinburgh residents’ historical and future engagement with the festivals in the city.

We are inviting members of Edinburgh’s communities to contribute their own stories of significant festival places and spaces, and where and when they would like to see Edinburgh’s festivals in the future.

Dr Louise Todd is an Associate Professor (Research) in International Festival and Event Management and Public Engagement Lead for the Business School at Edinburgh Napier University. Her research is in arts and cultural festivals and tourism with specific interests in event tourism, and festival city discourses; alongside creative, walking, participatory, and visual methods in these settings. Louise is also an artist: her artwork is concerned with people and places through the lens of tourism, both as a phenomenon, and as a set of practices. Louise’s interests reflect how we gaze upon, experience, and perform tourism when we engage with spaces and places.
